ParticipantYikes! The upside, by the third round you just might not care anymore. So, is this all taking place this coming week? Could this be the encouragement you need to clear your worst corner? What is it you would be most ashamed of? I had to let people (friends and neighbors) in yesterday that stopped by to return stuff or for a quick question and as the weather is nasty you can’t just leave them at the door stop. For the first time in what feels like forever I had a clean only mildly cluttered downstairs and I was just fine with letting them in. I have let countless people in over the last few weeks without being fine with letting them in, mostly workers. And I was cringing at the levels of clutter. I shall “drink to” your courage of letting them in. As horrible as it is, for me it was also moment of setting myself free. Exposing myself to one of my biggest fears and living to tell the story has helped me tremendously in accepting that this is a side of me that is just part of the package. And I am an awesome package!

ParticipantHello Oddsocks, and CQ I can feel your pain, I just had a technician this morning, after the painting guy three times last week, who will be coming again this week
and a few weeks ago another guy who had to go into all the rooms to take measurements
uggh
but what CQ said is true, it is a sort of shock therapy and one of our worst nightmares
specifically about your three people,
they are most likely used to seeing messy spaces, all three for different reasons, firemen, pest control people and construction workers…
so this will not be the first time or the last
second, they usually really do not care, they are focused on getting the job done whatever it is
maybe the firemen will be more “preachy” because it’s part of their job
but isn’t if fantastic that you get to participate in a declutter group? what an opportunity! congratulations, I really hope you will find help, sharing empathic people, accountability, tools, etc.
so think about the firemen as a price to pay for that, in my idea it is worth it, as a rite of passage
another aspect I keep thinking about again and again is that the shame of letting people in is due to the clutter
yet, at least in my case, and in the cases of so many I learn about, the clutter is so often connected to some sort of suffering, pain, break down in relationships, upbringing, and/or a relationship with ourselves
so I have been thinking a lot about the whole intimacy issue and how clutter avoids going deeper in relationship, I cannot “let anyone in” even if I do and can at some level, there is a great wound in that area
so getting through the pain of letting people in can be a small (or huge!) opening in the wall of clutter
at a physical level, trying to do some damage control and making things look a little less chaotic if possible
at a symbolic level, internal level, by opening up to others and exposing ourselves to all that clutter “protects” us from….???
wishing you the best of luck and all my “virtual” support

ParticipantMany thanks for the wise advice! Had a legitimate reason to postpone fire visit so now 12th Jan. Its a very good point that they will have seen it all before! And worth the preachy bit for the clutter group. I know that I am very very lucky that there is a group in my area. Its funded by the Council and run by Mind. Many thanks too for the good wishes! ParticipantSo what about the other 2? Are they still coming? Do you have plans to prepare for the visit on Jan 12? IF you do, please share we will cheer you on! We are hosting a children’s birthday party here tomorrow. I could use some cheering, too! December 16, 2018 at 11:37 pm #111307ShedTheShame
ParticipantThurs afternoon my home phone and internet went down. Called the service company; earliest available appt was Sun morning. I took it. The last time my internet went out — I was so ashamed to let anyone in that I lived without internet service for at least 2 months, if not longer
 I took my laptop to the library during those months and used their unsecured internet, all the whilepaying for my non-functioning home service. Saturday night when I went to bed… still hadn’t done any significant tidying. Got up 2-1/2 hrs before the scheduled appointment time on Sun morning. Had breakfast. Washed dirty dishes. Put away / hid some stuff. Swept the floor. Straightened up my desk somewhat. Made sure the modem was easily accessible. Certainly far from
Architectural Digest— but I was notin my usual Panic Mode :!:
::!: :o When the technician arrived, I didn’t start apologizing for the state of my home or making excuses for the clutter. I led him to the modem. He popped in and out of the house a couple times. While we waited to see if the internet connection was back on, we chatted about how shopping for his kids’ Christmas presents was harder now with Toys R Us sadly no more.
My phone and internet were restored. I wished him a nice day and a Merry Christmas. And I went on with my day.
I think I’ve been taken over by an alien because I don’t recognize myself
 Oddsocks– hats off to you for joining the decluttering group :!: Maybe this alien who’s taken over me will pay you a visit on Jan 12th:lol: CQ– how’d the b/day party go?? December 16, 2018 at 11:45 pm #111308Oddsocks

Sorry that I didnt see your message before your party- hope you have recovered? The kind of event that could lead tomoreclutter to sort out! Pest control coming on Friday. Need to do lots of decluttering so they can get to the relevant space. Threw out some stuff, moved some into the hall as I was doing it. But havent actually tidied that up, so decluttering of thatnow essential! ( Being a wimp about the builder!) December 17, 2018 at 7:38 am #111309bluesyjay
ParticipantHello ladies! @CQI remember typing encouragement and solidarity words for your birthday party but cannot find any post of mine ???
maybe I was dreaming I posted it??
So how did it go and how is it going?
@StSGO YOU!!! that was a great step forward with the internet guy access no sweat! YAY!
@Oddsocksit’s great that you have
1 appointment fixed on January
another one soon
so my suggestion would be – from experience – to ride the momentum, I promise it helps, fix the builder now for asap, so you are already going about it
You are anyway already in the process of doing whatever you can to have the other people access, so one more you will notice less, then if you wait and have to restart the process
I have the painter yet again, and this is the third week he is around, and he will have to be coming again later, maybe tomorrow
it’s still stressful at some level because it’s not exactly fun to have someone you don’t know working in the house (but it could be better than lots of people I know actually
   Iand because the bathroom at this point will get delayed who knows for how long because the next days are sort of crazy
but I agree with StS that at a certain moment you get sort of desensitised to people seeing the mess
for me it’s also probably that I am so physically and emotionally tired I start to care less about whatever they could possibly think, I just need it done
rooting for you all!

ParticipantPhone line & internet restored yesterday morning. Phone line & internet down again this afternoon.
I’ll have the pleasure of another repair tech in my home. Two in four days
:!: December 20, 2018 at 6:20 am #111311ShedTheShame
Participant2nd repair tech came today. Happy to report that despite every room having visible clutter — I didn’t feel stressed letting him in I guess the alien’s still with me
 Here’s to the repair sticking this time

ParticipantJust had the pest control person. I have chucked some stuff, and tidied away some of the remaining. When I apologised to him about the clutter, I thought that he would say it wasnt that bad. Instead I got a stern lecture about how bad it is and the risks. *Really upsetting*. He confirmed that it is rats and showed me several holes to get blocked up. I suppose it was shock. How stupid of me to think that it wasnt awful!I need to contain the upset as I have depression (well controlled) and need to be OK for travelling to Liverpool (from London) on Sunday then spending 4 days there. Good to know there are other people like yourselves who knows what its like! Tho I’m not sure if people look back at threads of messages, rather than the main ones. December 21, 2018 at 4:20 pm #111313ShedTheShame
ParticipantOddsocks, I’m sorry the pest control person lectured you. And I understand how upsetting that must have been. But I hope you’re exercising self-compassion, and in case you’re not — I’m here to dole out some sompassion :!: You let the pest control person in to address the problem. And that’s huge. Because now you know where the holes are and they will be blocked up to take care of the problem. You are fixing the problem. You are “fixing” yourself. You are healing yourself. This is a WIN for you… a big ACCOMPLISHMENT. And I’m proud of you. Please let that sink in and enjoy your time in Liverpool
(((hugs)))

ParticipantMany thanks to folk for their replies. Shed the Shame; your post was brilliant- lots of thanks (and return hugs)! Had me crying in a nice way (not a sad way)! Very heartening! And so fast! I have now calmed down and will be fine for Liverpool. It didnt help at the time given his opinion, but I am liking that some things look better. I actually did some hoovering as well as clearing up in the hall! I hope that you have a great Christmas, and we will both do some decluttering next year!

ParticipantNot a nice way to speak to you – but if there really are rats getting into the house, do be very careful and act as soon as you can to keep them out and to clean, get rid of any food which could have been ‘got at’ by them – rats are dangerous in that, although they actually keep themselves clean and neat they carry diseases which can even be caught through contact with their urine – be sure to wear rubber gloves when cleaning. I used to work in the food industry and I keep all foods not in the fridge or freezer in jars, or boxes of metal, glass or thick plastic, with lids. Nothing can get in or out.
My own progress, such as it is, has taken years – but I am really seeing such a difference now it is just a matter of keeping on doing things regularly, so that they become the normal thing and everyday occurrences.
After a time, though – you might start to get sudden impulses to start to tidy shelves and corners where things have accumulated, and sometimes at the most inconvenient times – it does feel so very strange, but also enjoyable in an odd way.

ParticipantOh my. Not fun. I remember the first time I asked someone if they thought I was overweight and got an:”urm….” and a concerned look. That is kind of the same direction I think. Hoping for absolution but getting none and on top of it get a confirmation that it IS bad. I am with STS focus on the good. Also now you are in a position to deal with it! With Nana on the wear gloves thing. I heard a face mask is a smart thing, too when clearing things that have been soiled with urine or feces. You never know it might be just the push you need to really deal with this! I had mice getting into things on the patio and it did help me to just chuck it all and not try to clean things. Will he need to come back?

ParticipantThanks again for the posts- really useful! The pest control man came again today. He had mentioned the clutter before. I did a bit of apologising today, said I had chucked stuff, but he didnt say anything. But he emailed his report with the statement that deluttering needed. But what upset me was that he said the hygiene is bad! There were no dirty dishes or any festering food. Its true that a lot of the surfaces had stuff on them, but not dirty stuff, and the clear surfaces were clean. Very uncommonly for me, I had vacuumed all the carpet he saw, and the kitchen had a reasonably clean floor. I did get upset, but then I thought about the logical evidence bit as above. And felt a bit offended. But also remembering the wise advice folk have posted about how they see things all the time, and their opinion doesnt really matter. He’s not going to send environmental health round!
Fire safety check on Saturday- I will just see it like a dentist’s appointment ie has to happen, just look forward to afterwards!
