ParticipantWhat a good idea! The options and doing it together should help motivation!
I would find it too hard to work up to 31 things
Otherwise, I think I should try more than one thing. And a longer time. I need to get rid of lots of stuff and soon (I will do another post about that.)
You are so right about having a routine! I read somewhere about linking it to activities eg 4 things after breakfast. 2 things while waiting for the kettle to boil.

ParticipantNever too late to join a declutter party! I’ve been called in to work 7 of the last 9 days. We are feeling the high covid numbers in my area…
I must admit that working on the room of doom has taken place 4 out of the 13 days only. I am still happy with the progress I made, as we (kind of everyone invloved) decided to not only get my husband into the basement, but also on child moved into our old bedroom (which was slowly turning into a second room of doom) and another child into the first child’S room. So yes. Big switcheroo including 2 severely cluttered rooms. So my focus was on removing things from my old bedroom. I might have cheated and moved some into the room of doom downstairs
We also started to declutter the stuff of the 2 children getting new rooms. Today’S chore felt like a huge success because we not only got a huge basket full of clothes packed up to go to new owners, we also moved or first piece of furniture. This made room for setting up a wardrobe which is stored (taken apart) in my old bedroom. All in all to get this done things is moved between 4 different rooms in all directions and I started decluttering the 2nd basement room to get more storage room. Hahahaha yup. Totally me. Set out to declutter 1 room and now I am working on 5. I was a little irritated with myself at first but now I am thinking why ever not? We can get this done and I have a few people who are actually excited to help with the declutter as they will personally benefit from it.So far I have definitely thrown out 1 item a day. So if nothing else. I will have maed a habit of clearing out something every day! I am on leave for 2 weeks, which means unless the world comes to an end they will not call me in. I am sure I can get A LOT done in 2 weeks! Looking forward to hearing about what you achieved!

ParticipantYo and hohohow are we doing? I have one child moved into the new room, but not out of the old room. This child better never go through any trauma! I helped some, but think that it is crucial that the work is done by the owner and that learning to declutter is a good skill to have.
IT is a big step, somehow I don’T feel like celebrating yet. I wanted to be A LOT further. Had my booster last week and it knocked me off my feet. After basically no noteworthy reaction the first 2 times this came as a bit of a surprise. I was out for 2 days. Just too tired to even think. By now I am so frustrated with how little was accomplished last week that I don’t even want to continue.
We did throw away quite a bit, so that is good.
Does anyone have a success story to cheer me up?

ParticipantHi CQ, festive wishes to you and everyone on the forum. Well I’m really really late to your December declutter party but what a brilliant idea, especially as at this time of year we’re all normally bringing lots of things in to our homes.
You wanted a success story to cheer you up Queenie so I hopefully have a partial one for you. On my birthday last July I promised myself I would clear at least 1000 items from my cluttered home within a year. I keep a journal of everything that goes and find it helps to keep me accountable. It was a slow start but I’m up to item 385 today
! I don’t count single receipts or pieces of paper but it’s been mostly clothing, household items and books.
At first I found it hugely difficult and still find letting go of some things emotionally draining(my parents stuff in particular) but the more I achieve the better I’ve started to feel about it all. There has even been progress in my own “room of doom” where I can now actually see the floor. Guess what, I was having a bit of a lull in proceedings but catching up on all the recent posts on the forum and finding your December declutter challenge has spurred me on again so when I finish writing this post it’s out of the door with another two bags to the charity shop(think they are getting a bit tired of seeing my face to be honest)Well done everyone for rising to CQ’s challenge, we all know how difficult overcoming hoarding is but things like CQ suggests are all tools that help to retrain our brains to adopt positive behaviours. We CAN do this and reclaim our homes and our lives. Take care all and have a wonderful Christmas. Xx

ParticipantThank you so much Peacelily! It always feels like such a lonely journey and its good to know that others like you are out there and getting their life back step by step. The room is still not empty and I just want to shove it all into laundry baskets and move it into the new room, but I know if I do this no one will ever look at that stuff again and the baskets will just sit there for the next 5 years. So I have dropped my expectations for a perfect Christmas. I will just focus on this stupid room to have it over with…

ParticipantFor all of you who don’t celebrate Christmas….perfect time to declutter!
December 26, 2021 at 9:26 am #114705Drowning91
ParticipantHey all, merry christmas and happy holidays.
I have been completely out if the game 😔 sorry guys!
Lots of big things going on and none of them good unfortunately.
I managed to clear part of the living room but thats about it. Ive actuallu got a spare day today and im going to try a couple of areas around the house.
Im going to try over the next few days to really get my head in the game. As being so busy and running around has bought to light how essential it is for me to clear up.
Im going to do house things today and then the rest of the week between running here there and eveywhere, i will work on my room of doom. Hopefully i can give a decent update by the end of the week.
I hope everyone is okay and please reach out to me if youre not. We can try and work through things together – a problem shared and all that.

ParticipantHere and there and everywhere! Yup, me too. Sorry to hear that there is so much trouble. Remember, everything out is out. So even if you just find 5 min week it is a start. I think I have said it before. My hoarding levels are so low, that people won’t really know when they come into the house. I have been throwing away so much this month but it feels like I made no difference, because it was all in children’s rooms. So Yes. I am making huge progress, I just have to allow myself to see it!
My room of doom is worse than before, as a few things that we didn’t feel like deciding about went down there. And just walking in there makes me want to cry. I will need a serious boost of motivation to tackle that room!
